North or South Carolina? The difference matters

The state line of South Carolina may be moved and if so, it could affect a number of businesses in South Carolina. People looking into commercial real estate in the area need to be aware of these potential changes, as laws in the two states may vary. That can impact the plans you had for the land you purchased.

In a case of one man who lives near to the border of the two states, he reported that the change would mean higher gas prices and eliminate his firework and alcohol sales. For that business owner, his entire career could go up in smoke just because of a state line alteration.

In January 2015, legislation will be submitted to discuss what some people would get for deciding to move the state line. Some business and homeowners will essentially swap states due to the new state line drawn up by surveyors; unfortunately, that could mean state taxes, laws and other legalities completely change.

It's said that back taxes due to the switch would be eliminated, and the legislators are working on ways to keep children in their same schools. In-state colleges may still take old South Carolina students despite the address change to North Carolina. Some businesses found themselves in trouble in this situation due to a state line cutting through the property; that means they may have to answer to two different state health departments, tax associations and regulations.

States don't change their lines often, and this is allegedly a case of solidifying the line, not moving it. However, when you're a business owner, changes like this can affect you in a multitude of ways. The best thing you can do is get legal help that will point you in the right direction and help you protect your rights.
