South Carolina ranks well on hurricane building codes

If you're considering purchasing a property in an area of South Carolina where hurricanes are likely to strike year after year, you want to know that it can stand up against the wind and rain that could pummel it. You don't want to live in a home that will have its windows shatter or siding fly off, and you certainly don't want to invest in a beautiful basement just to have it flooded.

Fortunately, South Carolina has ranked well on its building codes for a hurricane-prone state, and this means you can be more confident that your purchase will stand up against a hurricane. According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety CEO, damage to properties are reduced by being stronger and resilient against these storms. Areas with higher ratings are better able to rebound following a serious hurricane.

On top of that, the amount of governmental disaster aid is reduced thanks to the use of stronger materials, and the economy doesn't suffer as much following a natural disaster. South Carolina ranked third out of the seven states ranked for hurricane-prone buildings.

The story reports that Virginia was rated highest and had a score of 95 out of 100 points for its building codes. Next, Florida followed close to the lead with 94 of 100 points. South Carolina finished with 92 points. Below these states, Texas had a menial 36 points to indicate preparedness, but further northeast, Delaware ranked the lowest with only 17 points for its buildings, showing that hurricane preparedness may not be a major concern in the area.
